Touching the Earth: Cleaning Products (Tip Three)

April 4th, 2010 by Jennifer Bradley

Choose Cleaning Products that are not Harmful to the Environment: New Tips from Matt Basel of Dallas Shambhala Center

The Touching The Earth Initiative is a global effort throughout The Shambhala Community to raise awareness of and take action on global sustainability issues.

Here are a few tips to help make your household cleaning a little better for the environment…

Don’t trust terms like Biodegradable, Nontoxic and Environmentally Friendly.
Read the labels and avoid cleaners that contain Chlorine and Phosphates. These are two of the worst!

Try products like Baking Soda, Bonami, Biokleen, etc.

A number of these and other products can be found in Green Living (a local retailer with lots of great products and ideas).

Or make your own…

- Drain Cleaner

Pour a half-cup of baking soda down the sink and add at least a cup of vinegar. Cover the drain and wait a few minutes, then rinse with a mixture of boiling water and salt.

- All purpose Cleaner/Window Cleaner:

Mix two ounces of vinegar with a quart of water in a spray bottle.

- Silver Polish:

Put a sheet of aluminum foil into a plastic or glass bowl. Sprinkle the foil with salt and baking soda and fill the bowl with warm water. Soak your silver in the bowl and tarnish migrates to the foil. Dry and buff.

- Brass Cleaner:

Cut a lemon in half, sprinkle it with salt and rub the lemon on the metal. Buff with a cloth.

- Rust Remover:

Use vinegar to remove rust on nuts and bolts and other mineral deposits such as calcium deposits.

    Living in a Living World

Acharya Moh Hardin explores how our sense perceptions-what we see, hear, smell, taste and touch-play a key role in the cultivation of mindfulness and awareness on the path of meditation.

Our sense perceptions play a key role in the cultivation of mindfulness and awareness on the path of meditation. How we are instructed to relate with our sense perceptions, however, will vary depending on what we are trying to accomplish in our meditation. If we are cultivating mindfulness, sense perceptions can prove distracting, while the cultivation of awareness is going out into our perceptions, and discovering a world alive with strength and beauty.

Here is a simple weekly tip to help lessen your personal carbon footprint!

    Decrease Your Phantom Load

The phantom load is the power consumed by any device while it is switched off.
Entertainment center components (i.e. DVD player, gaming and cable boxes), Cell phone and computer chargers (these chargers still draw power even when not charging your electronics), TV’s, toasters, computers, coffee makers, etc.

    Ways to improve:

  • Use power strips to conveniently turn related device on and off.
  • Put those power strips and other devices on timers so they are not drawing power while your house is empty or while you are sleeping.
  • Activate any energy saving modes within appliances and computers.
  • Create a battery charging station to control all your chargers.
  • Turn off lights and appliance you are not using.

  • These are just a few easy things you can do that will have an impact!

“According to the DOE, vampire or phantom loads, which are appliances and devices that appear to be off but are still drawing power, account for over three billion dollars or around seven percent of U.S. electricity use”.

We will have more tips and activities to come!
